Regenerative Medicine: Stem Cells and Their Role in Healing

Regenerative medicine harnesses the body’s innate ability to repair and replace damaged tissues, with stem cell research emerging as a cornerstone of this discipline. Stem cells possess unique capabilities for self-renewal and differentiation into specialized cell types, making them promising candidates for therapeutic interventions in conditions such as neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular disorders, and tissue injuries. This article reviews the biological properties of stem cells, their mechanisms in tissue regeneration, current applications in clinical practice, and the challenges facing their broader adoption. Special emphasis is placed on emerging technologies, such as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and 3D bioprinting, which are expanding the therapeutic landscape. While ethical considerations and safety concerns remain, ongoing research continues to position stem cell–based therapies as transformative tools in modern healthcare.
